it does so with a bright flash and the crack of electricity.

What could be better?

True, the battery door is not particularly well secured, but it's
not a big deal.

There are actually three grids in the paddle.The two outer ones
have large mesh that allows insects to pass inside, while the
middle one uses much smaller mesh.Voltage is applied between
the center grid and both outer grids.

I haven't made an effort to poke my fingers into the grids, but it
looks like you could give yourself a shock...if you worked at it.
My advice:Don't.

(More customer reviews)The bug zapper worked for about a day and then just didn't charge right.Contacted the company and they were pretty responsive as they arranged a switch and actually sent me 2 in its place. Since then, one of the chargers has failed to work.The product actually works on small flying insects but we were still getting eaten alive in the backyard with the zappers right near us.

(More customer reviews)This is the best zapper that I bought from Amazon. The first zapper worked great for one season. It had several fixable breakdowns, until finally it just disintegrated. The second zapper, called Charcoal Companion, is very similar to the one that fell apart last year and I don't expect it to last much longer. Besides that, CC requires you to press two buttons instead of one, which is a very strange idea indeed. When you are under a sustained black fly/moskito attack, your finger dexterity is greatly diminished, which results in more wins for the other side.

This zapper has none of those problems. It is incomparably better designed, very sturdy, no loose pieces, and the electrified grid is protected by a safety mesh on both sides, so that you accidentally don't zap yourself or your girlfriend. And it costs less! Can't beat that. The reason I call it "nuclear" is because it has a prominent A over the grid. It is indeed a weapon of choice. Just nuke 'em!

One of the great things about this model isunheralded in the list of features Amazon gives.With the addition of an(included) strip of UV-activated bait, it's positively lethal againstmosquitos.We've found it to be much more effective than citronellatorches.
About the only thing that mars this otherwise excellent deviceis the need to place it in front of the area you mean to protect.Thiswould typically mean placing it away from a house, not next to it. Depending on your particular site, this can mean using extension cords,which come with their own set of safety issues.Happily, however, this isan extremely energy-efficient device, so it's definitely not going to breakyour electricity budget.
